David Robinson gives IDEA Carver Academy kids shopping spree

Academy Sports and Outdoors partners with Robinson to give kids Spurs gear

SAN ANTONIO – Thirty kids from IDEA Carver Academy got to meet San Antonio Spurs legend David Robinson.

He teamed up with Academy Sports and Outdoors so that the kids could go on a shopping spree for new Spurs gear.

The free stuff is to encourage kids to stay in school and go on to college.

"I want to see every one of them succeed and I think it takes all of this stuff to make them understand that they have a great support system," said Robinson.

David Robinson teamed up with IDEA public schools to convert carver academy to a public charter school.

Robinson wanted low-income students to have a good quality education and have the ability to go to college.

He's put a lot of his own personal money into the school and he thinks it's a slam dunk for the community.

"The kids need to know that we care about them, that we care about what they're doing (and) encourage them every step of the way," said Robinson.

Manuel Garcia brought his son to meet David Robinson. His son picked out a basketball and banner, but what impressed Robinson was his cool haircut.

"It's a beautiful thing that he's doing and you can tell they both sit down and watch the Spurs with me, it's a beautiful thing," said Manuel Garcia.

Alethia Kindred couldn't be happier for her kids. She says seeing her kids look up to someone like David Robinson is a blessing.

"It's a wonderful experience to be able to come out here and enjoy the time with our kids, watching them shop and get free things. Who doesn't like free things>" said Alethia Kindred.

IDEA plans to build 20 schools in San Antonio, and they just announced the location for their second campus at the intersection of South Flores Street and West Harding Boulevard.
