Family, friends honor young man killed in weekend quadruple shooting

Joe Soto, 20, shot in head at party Sunday morning

SAN ANTONIO – Wrong place at the wrong time.

That's what family of 20-year-old Joe Soto say about the man killed during a quadruple shooting at a weekend party on the city's Southwest Side.

Soto and three others were shot in the 3000 block of Fidelia Sunday morning. He was driven to Southpark Mall in a truck with two others, where he was pronounced dead due to a gunshot wound to the head.

One by one, shirts were sold to benefit the family of Soto prior to a vigil held at Holy Cross High School, where he graduated from just last year.

Soto's mother was too distraught to talk, but his cousin was able to remember the young athlete lost.

"He was loved. He was a good kid taken at the wrong time," Lauren Rubio said.

Soto's family is grateful for the outpouring of love. They're planning a plate sale for this weekend.

"Nobody expected it," Rubio said of the death. "Everybody's torn by it and we have all this support from everybody."

Rubio said Soto was supposed to be starting college soon and was even going to start a new job on Monday.

How the young man with such potential died still shocks many.

"What if that was your kid? What if that was your cousin? What if that was your brother? Your sister? It could be anybody," Rubio said. "Nowadays, you never know who it could be. That's why you have to live life like there's no tomorrow."

San Antonio police are still working to locate the gunman and determine the motive behind the deadly shooting. They do believe an argument broke out at the party, but aren't sure if any of the four men shot were involved in it.
