Hundreds camp at city parks for Easter weekend tradition

SAN ANTONIO – Hundreds of people are already having a good time camping at San Antonio parks for the Easter weekend. After years of keeping this tradition, many families knew what to bring on Good Friday.

Feeding four kids, 10 grandchildren and six nephews is no small task, and in his 25th year taking part in the tradition, Gregory Flores came prepared. He had an assortment of sausage, jalapeno poppers and beef fajitas for the Friday night meal.

"Saturday is going to be more fajitas, chicken, more sausage," Flores said.

Tents and tape stretch as far as the eye can see at Brackenridge Park.

After almost losing his spot, Carlos Gomez has had a family member keeping guard for most of the week.

"(I) come back Wednesday (and) the tape is gone. Now we got to fight for it again," said Gomez, who is on his 10th year of Easter camping.

He’s prepared for up to 50 people and brought a professional barbecue and a portable restroom.

It's all a uniquely San Antonio practice.

The Gutierrez family remembers when they moved from Lubbock five years ago and got invited.

"I said, 'Not a park. I thought they were going to a woods," said 12-year-old "Ponch" Gutierrez Jr. while fishing with his dad and sister.

"(It’s a) good thing for everybody to get out, for the kids to get out and put their instruments and their games down for a while and enjoy the outdoors," said his father, "Ponch" Gutierrez.
