SAN ANTONIO – An off-duty Northside Independent School District police officer shot a man who was allegedly trying to break into a home in West Bexar County, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the incident happened after 3:30 a.m. Friday in the 1600 block of Overlook Bend, near Marbach Road.

According to BCSO, deputies initially responded to the area for a report of an assault.

When deputies arrived, they couldn’t get a lot of information. They returned a second time, and a deputy heard what sounded like someone breaking into the back of the home.

At the same time, the off-duty NISD officer heard the commotion at his neighbor’s home and went outside to investigate.

At some point, deputies said, the off-duty NISD officer shot the man who was allegedly trying to break into the home.

The man, 25, was hit in the calf. The BCSO deputy at the scene applied a tourniquet until EMS arrived. The man was taken to the hospital and his condition is unknown.

The man who was shot lives in the home that he was breaking into, deputies said. He allegedly assaulted someone else in the house beforehand.

The officer is a five-year veteran of NISD’s police department. He is on administrative duty while BCSO investigates the shooting.
