Police investigating what caused pickup to fly off elevated South Side roadway

Driver killed in early morning crash at Loop 410, S. Presa

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are at a loss trying to explain what caused a driver to lose control on an elevated highway access road and crash, sending his pickup plummeting onto the railroad tracks below.

They received a call about the crash just before 5:30 a.m. Thursday and found damage to the guardrail of the SE Loop 410 access road near S. Presa Street. Then they noticed the truck below, laying on its roof on the railroad tracks beneath that elevated road.

When officers reached the overturned vehicle, they discovered that the man inside it was dead.

Based on the damage at the scene, it appears the pickup broke through the guardrail before tumbling and hitting the embankment at least once on its way down.

Police were not sure right away what went wrong on the road.

Police spent hours investigating the crash scene from both above and below the highway. (KSAT 12 News)

Members of SAPD’s Traffic Investigations Division spent quite a while collecting evidence at the scene.

During the investigation, all railroad traffic in that area was brought to a halt.

A train could be seen sitting on the tracks about a half mile down the road.

Police were not able to offer any information about the driver right away.

They say it will be up to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office to identify him.
