Suspect arrested for pistol-whipping man multiple times during robbery on Northwest Side, police say

The victim was bleeding ‘profusely’ from his head, affidavit says

SAN ANTONIO – A suspect has been arrested for robbing and pistol-whipping a man on the Northwest Side last month, according to San Antonio police.

Joe Angel Castillo, 22, was booked on Thursday and charged with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, booking records with the Bexar County Jail show.

An arrest warrant affidavit states that on Sept. 17, Castillo and an unknown person approached the 46-year-old victim as he walked to his car in the 8800 block of Huebner Road, near Babcock Road.

Castillo pointed a handgun at the victim and the other assailant pointed a long rifle at him, the affidavit states.

They then began hitting the man with the weapons, causing him to “bleed profusely” from his head, the affidavit states.

The victim fell to the ground, and Castillo searched the man’s pockets and took his wallet and cell phone, police said.

The assailants then fled in a silver four-door vehicle.

Police said the ordeal was captured on surveillance footage, and the same silver vehicle seen fleeing the scene was stolen just hours prior.

The car had a GPS tracker in it, and police later located it and conducted surveillance.

Investigators said they saw Castillo and two other people getting into the stolen vehicle. When officers conducted a traffic stop, Castillo tried to run off, the affidavit states.

He was apprehended by police, the affidavit states, and he was in possession of the victim’s ID and credit card.

Records show he is being held on a $75,000 bond.
