SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Humane Society is closed on Tuesday due to the winter weather, and the shelter is reminding people of ways they can protect their pets and other animals that are outside as the freezing temperatures are expected to last for the next few mornings.
Here are some tips for the San Antonio Humane Society:

- Keep your dogs and cats indoors. If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them.
- Limit time outside for walks/potty breaks. If you take your pet outside, bundle them up in a sweater if possible/needed.
- If you keep your pet in the garage, provide blankets for their comfort.
- If you park outside, check your car for cats and other small animals as they may seek warmth inside the hood. Tapping the hood before starting your engine should scare them away so they don’t get hurt.
Animal Care Services has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to weather-related violations.
State law says dogs cannot be tethered with any size chain at any time. It also states dogs cannot be left outdoors restrained and unattended in the case of officially defined extreme weather or situations in which an animal is in severe distress, including conditions in which the actual or effective outdoor temperature is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
Violators can face impoundment of their pet, fines up to $2,000 and 180 days in jail for repeat offenders. To report suspected violations, call 311 or 210-207-6000.
The San Antonio Humane Society will reopen at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
