SAN ANTONIO – Sarah Carabias Rush’s path to becoming president and CEO of greater:SATX started thousands of miles away from San Antonio — in Alaska.
During this episode of “Pickup Lines,” Rush told KSAT’s Ernie Zuniga that her mother left Oklahoma for Alaska looking for something different, and her father followed.
“My dad decided he couldn’t live without her, followed her up there, which is a really sweet story,” Rush said.
While living in Anchorage as a small child, Rush said former Pope St. John Paul II even blessed her during a visit.
Rush’s family later settled in Norman, Oklahoma, where she grew up with two English professors.
“We debated, we read books like crazy, we had great dinner time conversations,” Rush said.
Rush attended Austin College in Sherman and studied abroad in Costa Rica, Chile and Spain. After college, she moved to Dallas and took an administrative assistant position with the Dallas Chamber after initially applying for a director-level job. She was recruited to San Antonio and arrived in 2022.
Today, Rush leads greater:SATX, which works to attract employers and investment to the 10-county San Antonio region while also expanding workforce opportunities.
“Our job is to sell the San Antonio region ... to try to bring more employers here, create more job opportunities,” Rush said.
Rush believes the region has plenty of room to grow.
“San Antonio is so well positioned, and we have nothing but runway,” she said.
She also predicts San Antonio and Austin will become increasingly connected and could eventually be classified as a “mega region” sometime between 2040 and 2050.
