KERRVILLE, Texas – In early September, KSAT reported outrage from community members over the use of automated license plate reader (LPR) cameras in Kerrville and Kerr counties.
Taxpayers have asked the city to stop the contract with the AI company. After the governor called for a pause on all new contracts for Flock cameras, some cities have stopped the contracts altogether.

KSAT reached out to Kerrville to see if they had any intent to stop, and a spokesperson said:
“The City is aware of the recent action regarding automated license plate readers and is continuing to monitor developments at the state level.
“Based on the information currently available, the Texas Department of Transportation’s action pauses new permits for automated license plate readers along state-owned roadways. It does not appear to require local governments to discontinue existing LPR systems or prohibit their use generally.
“Because the TxDOT action applies to automated license plate readers broadly, rather than solely to a specific manufacturer, the brand of equipment would not necessarily determine whether a future installation within a state right-of-way is affected.
“At this time, the City has no additional changes regarding its use of LPR technology to announce. As with other public-safety technology, the City will continue to monitor applicable state requirements and evaluate its practices as necessary.”
A community protest against the AI cameras in Kerrville is set for Friday; the Kerr Freedom Coalition is leading it.
The protest is happening at the corner of Junction Highway and Harper Highway from 4:30-7 p.m. Organizers say they are standing up for freedoms and protest government invasion of privacy. A similar rally was held a week prior.
