Speeding pickup truck hits, kills pedestrian on sidewalk, police say

Paul Steven Jones suspected of driving drunk in fatality on Perrin Beitel Road

SAN ANTONIO – A 26-year-old man was drunk when his pickup truck struck and killed a pedestrian late Wednesday night on the city's Northeast Side, police said.

Police said at around 11:53 p.m., Paul Steven Jones ran over a 54-year-old man before his pickup crashed into a bus stop in the 9300 block of Perrin Beitel Road.

"This victim was doing everything right, he was on the sidewalk, he was not in the street at all, he was completely an innocent victim," police spokesman Officer Doug Greene said.

Greene said Jones was speeding in the center turn lane when he lost control near Swans Landing. Heading south, the truck moved to the wrong side of the road.

Crime scene markings appear to show that after the truck jumped the curb, it traveled through the middle of the sidewalk and eventually went into a grassy area, narrowly missing a drainage ditch.

The pickup then moved back into the road and hit the bus stop on the other side, police said.

After undergoing a roadside sobriety test, Jones was arrested.

He was charged with intoxication manslaughter and possession of narcotics. He is being held in the Bexar County Jail on bonds totaling $78,000.

"We as police officers see this all the time, and it's frustrating," Greene said. "We have ride shares, we have taxis, there's designated drivers, you can walk. Innocent people can lose their lives. That victim did not decide to get intoxicated that day. That victim just simply was trying to get somewhere."
