Houston-area teen survives fall from California cliff into ocean

Sugar Land native Gerard Hobbs was recording his friend, slipped

A Houston-area teen fell off a cliff while sightseeing in San Diego and lived to tell about it.

Sugar Land native Gerard Hobbs was recording his friend and fellow Kempner High School graduate Amerdeep Sheemar at San Diego’s Sunset Cliffs when he slipped about 20 feet into the ocean.

“I was sitting and as my feet were hanging like he was getting a clip of me and then when I turned around he was gone,” Sheemar said.

He hit the rocks as he fell but only suffered a few scratches on his leg, he said.

“I should be dead right now,” Hobbs said.

San Diego lifeguards used a pulley-apparatus to hoist Hobbs to safety.

The near-death experience isn’t stopping the duo’s California trip. They plan to continue their vacation, but won’t be back on the cliff, they said.

The trip is a part of a video and photography project the two are working on with another friend. They plan to be out west until Aug. 11.
