‘The kids were shaking': East Side football community unnerved by shooting

No arrests made so far

SAN ANTONIO – Three days after gunfire erupted at a youth football practice on the East Side, San Antonio police have not yet arrested or named a shooter.

The shooting left Michael Williams dead, and Dominic Osborne was stabbed in the neck and taken to the hospital. The attacker fled soon after.

It happened in the parking lot of the Highland Warhawks field, where Adria Hall, a coordinator for the league, and about 100 kids were standing.

“The kids were shaking,” she said, recalling how all the coaches and adults worked to get the children to safety.

On Thursday night, the kids suited up for the first time since the incident after having a vigil and meeting with the coaches and police chief Wednesday night.

“It was something we all needed so we could provide peace within ourselves so we could pass it onto our kids,” Hall said.

They’re trying to refocus the students’ attention to a big game happening this weekend.

“One more win and we advance to Dallas stadium” for a conference championship game, Hall said.

The students have worked hard all season and the majority of their seven teams have placed first or second in the bracket. Their ages range from 4 to 13 years old.

“We're not here to walk away. We have a job to do. We have lives to change. We have kids who look up to all the coaches,” Hall said.

Police said the incident involved a brawl between a woman and her old and new boyfriend, and a fourth person stepped in with a gun.

“This kind of incident could have happened anywhere,” Hall said.
