U.S. Marshal's Service warns of local phone scam

Imposters threaten fines, jail time

SAN ANTONIO – The U.S. Marshal’s Service is warning people to look out for scammers this holiday season.

The agency said imposters are calling people, threatening a fine if they don’t report for jury duty or other offenses.

The fraudsters tell victims they can avoid arrest if they buy a prepaid debit card or gift card. Then they’re asked to read the card number over the phone.

The U.S. Marshal’s Service will never ask for financial information over the phone.

Anyone who thinks they have become a victim of this scam is asked to call the local marshal's office at 210-472-6540 and the Federal Trade Commission.
