Level 2 indicates the heat indexes for the weekend will be above or at 108 degrees.

Dr. Colleen Bridger, director of Metro Health, said the best way to beat the heat is to take cover indoors.

“It’s important to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during the hottest time of the day and check on neighbors -– especially the elderly,” Bridger said. “Drinking water throughout the day will help prevent complications from heat exposure.”

In addition to self-care, people are asked to check on their neighbors, especially the elderly, those with special needs and children.

Metro Health said the temperatures can cause sun stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat stroke with prolonged exposure.

Warning signs of heat stroke include headache, dizziness, light-headedness, lack of sweating despite the heat, red hot and dry skin, muscle weakness, cramps, nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, which may be either strong or weak, rapid, shallow breathing, behavioral changes such as confusion, disorientation or staggering.

If a child displays symptoms of heat stroke, Metro Health advises that 911 be called and that the child be given a cold bath.
