Officials ID woman who died in apparent accidental shooting

Shooting happened in 1600 block of Romero

SAN ANTONIO – A 23-year-old woman who was shot in the chest in a suspected accidental shooting Wednesday morning has died.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office identified the woman as Alexis Martinez, who they say died after being rushed to a hospital.

San Antonio police said they went to a West Side home in the 1600 block of Romero Street around 11:22 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a shooting.

Martinez was found by responding officers in a back bedroom with a gunshot wound to her chest. She was taken in critical condition to University Hospital, where she later died.

Preliminary information released on the day of the shooting indicated Martinez was shot in the head, but police now say she suffered a wound to her chest.

Police said the handgun believed to be used in the shooting was recovered.

Family members were also in the home at the time of the shooting, police said.

The incident remains under investigation, and homicide detectives are speaking with at least one witness to the shooting.

Police did not say whether if anyone will face charges.
