San Antonio to get Triple-A team from Colorado, Double-A team headed to Amarillo

San Antonio Missions name will stay

SAN ANTONIO – A Triple-A baseball team could be coming to San Antonio as soon as 2019, owners of the San Antonio Missions said in a release Wednesday.

Elmore Sports Group said it plans to relocate San Antonio's Double-A team to Amarillo and move it's Colorado Springs Triple-A team to San Antonio. All the while, the Missions' name will stay in San Antonio.

According to a release, "the move is part of a realignment of several Elmore-owned clubs."

Elmore Sports Group said in a release it had some difficulty drawing interest from major league teams in maintaining a Triple-A team in Colorado Springs due to elevation and weather. Both factors presented a challenge in developing and evaluating players.

“We are very excited,” said D.G. Elmore, group chairman. “We have moved teams at various times in our 36-year history of owning ball clubs, and as I reflect, I don’t think there is a time we have seen the level of business support like this.”

Mayor Ron Nirenberg said the city had been in talks with Elmore Sports Group about bringing a Triple-A team to the city and the announcement takes the city "to the next level."

While Wolff Stadium has been approved for Triple-A play in the short run, Nirenberg mentioned the city has not yet received plans for a more long-term home for the team.

"Until we see all of that, I have no further comment," Nirenberg said. "We look forward to hearing more about their plans in the near future."
