Popovich reacts to church shooting, chooses not to talk basketball after Spurs game

SAN ANTONIO – Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich reacted to the deadly Sutherland Springs church shooting after San Antonio’s game against the Phoenix Suns Sunday evening at the AT&T Center.

Popovich chose not to speak about the game and instead offered his condolences to the families affected by the shooting. Here is what he told the media after the game:

"We won a basketball game, but considering what’s gone on today, it's pretty meaningless when you think about the tragedy those families are suffering,” Popovich said. "It’s inconceivable and impossible to put your head around so I think talking about basketball tonight is probably pretty inappropriate.”

The Spurs held a moment of silence and turned down the lights inside the AT&T Center to honor the victims before the game started.

At least 26 people were fatally shot and 20 more were wounded in the shooting at the First Baptist Church.

The gunman, who died a short time after the shooting, was identified by authorities as Devin Patrick Kelley.

Sutherland Springs is located 31 miles from the AT&T Center.
