No, the 'Hamilton' Movie Can't Win Any Oscars Next Year
Next year's Academy Awards will not be where it happens, if what's happening is Disney+'s Hamilton movie winning an Oscar. (After all, as the adjusted rule stipulates, the filmed version was originally slated to open in theaters.) According to the 93rd Academy Awards Special Rules for the Documentary Awards, "Works that are essentially promotional or instructional are not eligible, nor are works that are essentially unfiltered records of performances." According to Variety, the language barring recording stage production was added in 1997. Hamilton is currently streaming on Disney+, while the 93rd Oscars were recently postponed two months and are set to take place April 25, 2021.
Like the Oscars, the 2021 BAFTA Awards Have Been Postponed Due to Coronavirus
Following the postponement of next year's Oscars, the rest of awards season is following suit: The 2021 EE British Academy Film Awards has been redated to take place two weeks ahead of the Academy Awards. BAFTA announced on Monday that its upcoming ceremony will be held on April 11, 2021. "This change from the previously announced date of Feb. 14 acknowledges the impact of the global pandemic and accommodates an extended eligibility period," BAFTA said in a statement. The BAFTA Awards traditionally takes place two weeks before the Oscars, so it's only fitting that the Academy's announcement earlier in the day -- that its ceremony had been pushed from Feb. 28 to April 25 -- would prompt a rescheduling from BAFTA. The Oscars: Still not good enough
To institutional male bias to a continued inability to award films that arent palatable enough for the predominantly older white male crowd who still inundate the Academy. The surprise was when South Korean director Bong Joon-Hos film Parasite won four Oscars. First for Original Screenplay, then Best International Feature Film, then Best Director and then the final award of the night, Best Picture. No South Korean film has won Best Picture, nor has someone from South Korea won in any of the categories that Bong won in. Few are tricked into thinking the Oscars have changed, but thankfully they all discussed aspects of the show that were good to see.trinitonian.com
We now know why Eminem performed at the Oscars -- sort of
(CNN) -- If you want Eminem at your function, all you’ve got to do is ask. Maybe he’ll say yes on the second try. "Lose Yourself" won Eminem the Oscar for Best Original Song in 2003 -- so why, in 2020, was he back on our screens, rapping about Mom's spaghetti? In an interview with Variety, Eminem said he never expected to win back then, so he didn't go. He didn't confirm that to Variety, but he did say he's open to it if the right script comes along.
What to expect from the Oscars: Top contenders, political speeches and pleas for diversity
The Oscars in particular have drawn ire in recent years for having too few nominees who were female or people of color. Only two of the 20 actors and actresses nominated were people of color, and no female director was nominated this year. It is expected that presenters and award winners could use their time at the podium to call out these disparities. A still from the film '1917'. "Parasite," South Korea's first nominated film at the Academy Awards, is expected to win best international feature and is a strong candidate for best original screenplay.cnbc.com
'Little Women' and '1917' should cash in at the box office from Oscar nod
The prestige of an Oscar nomination can give films an added boost the the box office, often called the "Oscar bump" or the "Oscar bounce." For some films, their box office haul can double after receiving the Academy Award best picture nomination, as was the case for "Green Book," "Call Me By Your Name" and "The Shape of Water." "Phantom Thread" garnered a whopping 70% of its total gross following its best picture nomination two years ago. This could certainly be the case for "1917" and "Little Women," which were only recently released. It's likely they will make the bulk of their box-office gross following their nominations for best picture.cnbc.com
2020 Oscar Nominations: Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and More of the Biggest Snubs and Surprises
The 2020 Oscar nominations arrived on Monday morning, and while there was plenty to celebrate -- the BongHive is eating good with Parasite's record six nominations -- there were more omissions this year than ever that had us scratching our heads or screaming into the void. Below, ET's resident Oscars pundit breaks down this year's biggest snubs and surprises, from the unforgiveable lack of nominations showered upon Hustlers and The Farewell to Little Women's not-so-little haul. Despite the original Frozen winning the Oscar in 2014, despite the sequel becoming the highest-grossing animated film ever, despite Olaf still being the best, Frozen 2 was shut out from Best Animated Feature. Our long national nightmare continues, as the Academy's music branch has once again snubbed the queen in Best Original Song, this time for The Lion King's "Spirit." Netflix leads Oscar nominations with 24 nodsa first for a streaming service
For the first time in Academy Award history, the studio with the most nominations is a streaming service. On Monday, Netflix nabbed 24 nominations for the big awards ceremony, more than any other media company in the industry this year. The streaming service has clashed with creators, theater owners and the Academy. While the film didn't win, it did pick up the best international feature, best director and best cinematography awards. In December, the streaming service garnered the most Golden Globe nominations (17), but only won two awards.cnbc.com

Why SA grandfather was charged in connection with an accidental shooting death
SAN ANTONIO - A 75-year-old man and his 14-year-old grandson were arrested earlier this week in connection with the September shooting death of a 13-year-old boy in north Bexar County. According to Sheriff Javier Salazar, the man had previously purchased an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle for his grandson as a gift. I think that is kind of a neat right of passage for many families here in South Texas," Salazar said. Flanary said Texas law holds adults criminally liable for guns that aren't secured. I think this is a perfect example of what not to do with a gun," Salazar said.
Have award shows gotten better or worse?
Illustration by Andrea NebhutLet me begin by saying I like award shows like the Oscars, the Emmys and the Tonys. However, I have started to understanding the viewpoint that these award shows can have negative side affects, such as crowding out other equally incredible shows, films or performances and only acknowledging a select 20 actors of a certain race. These criticisms are overly present in my personal favorite award show, the Oscars. The Oscars were created nearly 100 years ago and still has undisputed power over Hollywood, while also being the most-watched award show. We get it, they can act, but they dont need or deserve an award for each film they do.trinitonian.com
