Texas is experiencing its largest measles outbreak in 30 years. The virus has infected more than 600 people and killed two school-aged children.

The measles outbreak in West Texas didn’t happen just by chance.

A federal health agency says the U.S. has 884 confirmed measles cases this year as of Friday.

MMR vaccination rates vary by San Antonio district, with several schools reporting 100% coverage, while one has a rate as low as 40%.

As the measles outbreak in West Texas continues to expand, San Antonio’s health officials are raising awareness about the virus.

While a measles case has yet to be confirmed in San Antonio and Bexar County, hundreds of thousands of residents may have been exposed to the virus spreading rapidly throughout the state.

The Mennonite population being affected by a measles outbreak in West Texas is part of a larger, loosely affiliated group of churches worldwide with varied beliefs and leadership structures — and with sometimes strained or distant relations with public authorities.

The City of San Antonio Metropolitan Health District and the Hays County Health Department are alerting residents about a potential exposure to measles.

Two more counties, Potter and Parmer, have reported a measles case. The outbreak has cost state taxpayers $4.5 million to pay for immunization, testing and a public awareness campaign.

The ongoing measles outbreak in West Texas has doubled in size to 48 cases.
