Los Fresnos celebrates PLTW success

Project Lead The Way on Tuesday unveiled research about its curriculum in the Los Fresnos school district, saying it shows a clear advantage for PTLW students in life and careers beyond high school. In 2016 the Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School Distrait launched the PTLW curricula in kindergarten through fifth-grade, middle school and high school. “Absolutely.”David Dimmett, PTLW interim president and CEO, said Los Fresnos quickly saw the program’s success and deepened it. High school programs increased to nine courses across PTLW biomedical science, PTLW engineering and PTLW computer science. At Tuesday’s celebration, Resaca Middle School sixth graders Mara Marroquin and Natalia Yanez spoke.

Three Lady Falcons athletes choose NAIA schools

LOS FRESNOS — Los Fresnos is sending three girls to compete in the NAIA ranks next season. “Sara is that type of girl you cannot replace,” Los Fresnos coach Diego Luna said. Infante and Medina were part of a Los Fresnos girls powerlifting team that has won seven straight state championships. At state, Infante finished fifth and Medina finished second in their weight class. Medina joined Los Fresnos for her senior year because of how good the program is and because of Vela.

East Valley Baseball: Falcons hope to replicate 2021 postseason run

Last year, Los Fresnos made it all the way to the Region IV final, losing 3-2 to Smithson Valley. Santa Rosa will play host to Monte Alto in a single-elimination game. Harlingen High won a playoff game over Rivera to enter the playoffs and will play host to PSJA High. Brownsville Veterans Memorial begin its series with Sharyland High on Friday at home, and Porter will take on Sharyland Pioneer. The Raymondville Bearkats will play host to the opening game of their series with Corpus Christi Calallen on Friday.

East Valley Softball: Area teams set for start of playoffs

HARLINGEN — East Valley softball teams are playing the bi-district round of the playoffs this week. District 32-4A will begin its playoff series Thursday. Raymondville, the fourth seed out of 32-4A will head to Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway in a single-elimination game. Brownsville Lopez made the playoffs on the final day of district play. The area’s District 32-6A teams jump into the action Friday, as San Benito and Los Fresnos will play single-elimination games on the road.

Valley girls golfers begin regional competition

HARLINGEN — Rio Grande Valley girls golfers competed in the opening round of their respective regional tournaments Wednesday. Harlingen High’s Reagan Ramirez (93), Edinburg North’s Emilia Rodriguez (95), PSJA’s Kassandra Monroy (101) and Los Fresnos’ Camila Calderon (113) also competed from the Valley. Sharyland High is in fourth place in the Region IV-5A tournament, one stroke behind third place after the first day. She is in ninth place and one stroke behind the final individual qualifying place. La Feria’s Savannah Mendez (117), Vanessa Gonzalez (130), Maria Pizano (130), Jada Morales (133) and Leanna Perez (134) finished the day in 15th.

Second inning carries Lady Falcons to win over Lady Hawks

HARLINGEN — The Los Fresnos Lady Falcons scored six runs during the top of the second inning to power past the Harlingen South Lady Hawks 8-5 on Tuesday night. “Really proud of the girls,” Los Fresnos coach Jesus Garza said. During the top of the second inning, the Lady Falcons’ Dakota Martinez brought in the first run with an infield single. Lady Falcons senior Victoria Altamirano drove in the final run of the inning. Lady Falcons pitcher Katelynn Perez worked out of those jams well to go the distance.

WESLACO — The Weslaco High Panthers kept their perfect District 32-6A record intact by taking down Harlingen High 9-2 on Friday at Weslaco High School. We played as a team and we had a little breakdown here and there, but overall we did OK, hung in there and got the job done,” Weslaco High baseball head coach Eddie Serna said. Game 1 of the home-and-home series is slated for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Los Fresnos High School, with Game 2 set for 6:30 p.m. Friday at Weslaco High School. Los Fresnos (16–6, 6-0) defeated Brownsville Rivera 4-2 on Friday to improve to 16-6 overall and 6-0 in district. “Now that this one’s over it’s time to think about Los Fresnos,” Serna said.

East Valley Powerlifting: Boys bring back state medals

In the 220-pound weight class, Los Fresnos’ Anthony Elvir is the state champion after outlifting Mercedes’ Roan Galvan by 65 pounds. Joe Hernandez finished fifth at 1,080, Jorge Martinez placed sixth at 1,075 and Thomas Sandoval was eighth at 1,050. Another fifth-place finish from La Feria was turned in by Antonio Marroquin in the 242-pound weight class. Rio Hondo’s Matthew Lopez is bringing back silver after putting up a 1,775 in the 275-pound weight class. Scott Atkinson, also from Rio Hondo, came in fourth in the 308-pound weight class at 1,725.

Los Fresnos police investigating homicide

Los Fresnos police have identified the body of a man found lying on the road near Highway 100. Chief Hector Gonzalez said the man is 22-year-old Julio Cesar Gutierrez of Los Fresnos. Police were sent to 33000 block of FM 803 and Highway 100 -near Los Fresnos United High School- about 9:30 Wednesday in reference to a man found lying on the road with injuries. When the officers arrived at the location the man was already dead. Police urge anyone with information on the shooting to contact the Los Fresnos Police Department at (956) 233-4473.

Coming up big: Boys powerlifters break records en route to state meet

Jimenez, who won gold in his weight class, and 91 other powerlifters punched their tickets to state Saturday. Powerlifters qualified for the THSPA State Championships, scheduled for March 25 and 26 at Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene, by finishing first or second in their respective weight class at the regional meet or by posting a qualifying total set for each weight class at regionals. Weslaco East earned a second-place team finish with 18 points, followed by Edinburg North in third with 15 points. He got me fired up and ready to go and kill it.”Weslaco High powerlifters Sergio Lerma (181-pound weight class) and Thomas Santillan (308-pound weight class) combined to break three regional records. The 148-pound weight class was so strong, all 12 competitors qualified for the state meet by hitting the qualifying weight total of 1,200 pounds.

The Falcons, who won last year’s crown, finished in second ahead of Mission High and Edinburg Economedes, who tied for third with 13 points. Mass testing, vaccine sites planned in Cameron County

The county’s Office of Emergency Management and Fire and Cameron County Public Health are behind the efforts. Testing and vaccines will be available each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or until supplies run out. The Moderna vaccine will be available for first and second doses and booster shots. The CDC recommends that everyone 18 years and older who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to get the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine at least two months after receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Vaccines remain available at Cameron County Public Health Clinics Monday through Friday.

HIDALGO — Mission High’s season came to a close Friday night as the Eagles lost to the Los Fresnos Falcons 56-14 in Region IV-6A Division I playoff action at Bill Pate Memorial Stadium. “It’s not the outcome we wanted, but at the end of the day, it’s one of those things where we have to handle adversity better,” Mission High first-year head coach Daniel Longoria said. He scored three during the first half to give Los Fresnos a 35-14 halftime lead. The first was a 7-yard slant, and was followed by an 89-yard catch-and-run by Guzman through the Los Fresnos secondary. The Eagles finished with just 168 yards of total offense, while Los Fresnos racked up 365 yards of offense.

A pre-K classroom at Lopez Riggens Elementary School in Los Fresnos is under quarantine after at least one student tested positive for COVID-19. Other pre-K classrooms in the Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District have also been asked to quarantine, officials said. The pre-K class is made up of 4-year-old students. Classes in Los Fresnos started Aug. 16. Remote conferencing will be available district wide next week to students who might also be asked to quarantine.

Edinburg Vela quarterback Campbell set to step into spotlight

EDINBURG — The first offensive play of Edinburg Vela’s scrimmage against Los Fresnos on Thursday at Richard R. Flores Stadium didn’t go as planned. Campbell is set to lead the Edinburg Vela offense after spending his first three years on varsity as an understudy for former Vela quarterback A.J. Now, it’s his turn, Edinburg Vela head coach John Campbell (no relation) said. Rivera (221 rushing yards, three touchdowns) and Ted Galvan (303 rushing yards, three touchdowns). Vela also has weapons out wide in receivers Justin Vega (383 receiving yards, four touchdowns), Carlos Tamez (193 receiving yards, one touchdown) and tight end Jaden Tovar (129 receiving yards).

Los Fresnos announced Wednesday that former boys basketball first assistant coach Alex Lucio has been selected to be the next girls basketball coach for the Lady Falcons. “Ever since I graduated high school I always knew I wanted to be a head coach. It’s been a long journey to be a head coach and I finally got it, so it’s awesome. Falcons coach Marco Hinojosa quickly moved him up to be the varsity assistant. In the 2020-21 season, Lucio was the acting head coach for five games while Hinojosa was out due to COVID-19 protocols.

Report: Massive fire destroys condominium complex on South Padre Island

The Valley Star reported firefighters were working to extinguish the flames by spraying water from a nearby parking garage. Firefighters from South Padre Island, Port Isabel, Los Fresnos and Brownsville were called to the scene to assist in the fire response, per KRGV.
