Thousands of San Antonio ISD students, teachers, and staff are asking what's next after the board's controversial decision to close schools.

SAN ANTONIO Questions are mounting after a teacher at Burbank High School was placed on administrative leave this week. The action came after concerns were raised about San Antonio Independent School Districts plans for in-person learning next week. Lead Organizer with the San Antonio Alliance, Diana De Leon believes it was an act of retaliation. However, members with the San Antonio Alliance have filed a grievance with the principal at Burbank High School. Amphlett is also part of a coalition made up of SAISD teachers, students, and parents.

Teachers will be providing virtual learning from their classrooms, with all the resources they need and without distractions. While teachers conduct virtual learning in their classrooms, we will offer their school-age children supervision conveniently on the parents campus, using large spaces for social distancing such as libraries. This way each students learning continues seamlessly both for the teachers students and for their own children.

That decision, though, would only pertain to the remaining six weeks of the first, nine-week grading period. According to an SAISD spokesperson, teachers will be phased in through Labor Day starting with volunteers who are willing to go into schools first.

Do active shooter drills impact students? The group made recommendations on active shooter drills and proactive school safety solutions. Shelley Potter, president of the San Antonio Alliance of Teachers and Support Personnel, the union that represents San Antonio ISD teachers and employees, said the organization is talking with teachers about lockdown drills and collecting information.
