Click it or Ticket has prevented 5,000 traffic fatalities, NHTSA says

Campaign celebrating 15 years

SAN ANTONIO – This year, the Texas Department of Transportation marks the 15th anniversary of its “Click it or Ticket" campaign.

The campaign is meant to remind drivers and passengers about the importance of wearing a seatbelt while in a vehicle, to prevent serious injuries or death.

In 2002, when the campaign first started, only 76 percent of Texans wore seat belts.

Today, nearly 92 percent buckle up.

TxDOT said that remaining 8 percent is still troubling, because that number doubles at night.

At an event Wednesday, one woman spoke about surviving an accident, and said seatbelts helped her and four of her family members survive the crash.

"I hope that the Click it or Ticket campaign helps to show parents and children the importance of wearing your seatbelt because that could be the difference between life and death," Emilce Ferreira said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that since the campaign started, Click it or Ticket has resulted in more than 5,000 fewer traffic fatalities.
