Elderly woman killed in crash in front of her church

Victim was headed to meeting at Bulverde United Methodist Church, police say

BULVERDE, Texas – An 88-year-old woman who police said was arriving at her church in Bulverde for a meeting was killed Monday morning in a two-vehicle crash in front of the building.

Witnesses told police the woman was traveling southbound on Highway 281 at East Borgfeld Road when she failed to yield to northbound traffic as she made a left turn into Bulverde United Methodist Church.

The woman's Honda was hit by a pickup truck pulling a trailer, police said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

"It was a tragedy, a tragic accident. We have a history here with accidents. This is a fairly dangerous intersection," said the associate pastor, the Rev. Ruben Saenz.

Saenz said two other clergy members prayed over the victim and her family.

"What's important is just to be present, and we were able to do that today," Saenz said. "Not just as clergy, but as church members, as a family."

Saenz said the congregation is stunned by the sudden loss of one of their fellow church members.

The victim hasn't been identified.

The driver told police he did everything he could to avoid the crash.

The driver and two passengers in the pickup were treated at the scene for minor cuts from flying glass.
