SAN ANTONIO – A fiery 18-wheeler rollover crash closed down part of a Loop 1604 access road on the city’s Northeast Side early Friday morning, according to San Antonio police.

The crash happened just before 3 a.m. on Loop 1604 eastbound, near Green Mountain Road.

According to police, the driver of an 18-wheeler was traveling from out of state and was not familiar with the area when they hit the inner wall of the highway. That’s when, police said, the big rig drove across the main lanes of the highway and down the grassy hill onto the nearby access road.

SAPD said the cab of the 18-wheeler caught fire, but the driver managed to make it out safely. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Emergency response crews responded and are working to clear the access road. The main lanes of the highway are presently open.

Police did not say exactly what the big rig was carrying.
