Evacuees uncertain about what they are going to find once they leave SA

918 people in 3 SA shelters as of Saturday evening

SAN ANTONIO – As Hurricane Harvey moves away from the coast, many evacuees are still in San Antonio. But many aren’t sure what they’ll be going home to after the destructive storm ravaged through coastal cities.

The evacuees are free to go home, but the San Antonio Fire Department said it’s encouraging them to stay in the city until local authorities in coastal cities deem it’s safe to return.

As of 7 p.m. Saturday, there were about 918 evacuees in three San Antonio shelters and more could be on the way.

Many of those seeking refuge at Kazen Middle School said people were glued to their phones as news came out about just how hard their cities were hit. Some of them lost their homes, while others aren’t sure what they’ll find.

“Earlier we were just sitting there and a lady woke up and turned to us and said that she lost her entire house. You don’t say much. You can’t say much,” said Alexia McCormick, a Corpus Christi evacuee.

“It’s a lot of depression in there because people don’t know, especially people in Rockport, they’re going to go back to nothing — absolutely nothing. The trailers there are all gone. All the houses are gone. It’s a lot of people that just know there’s nothing left,” said Ducoe Mathis, another Corpus Christi evacuee.
