โShare the Shoesโ collection drive receives 2,070 shoes for Zapatos
SAN ANTONIO โ This holiday season, KSAT Community held its annual โShare the Shoesโ drive with SAPD substations to benefit Zapatos, Inc.With help from the community of San Antonio, 2,070 shoes were collected for children on all ages. โWe have approximately 2,070 shoes that have been donated, it was double of what we did last year,โ said SAPD Officer Doug Greene. Vans and police cars were being loaded up this morning throughout San Antonio to help distribute the shoes to the six SAPD substations. No child should be burdened by the shoes on their feet and no family should have to decide between shoes and dinner. KSAT Community operates in partnership with University Health, Energy Transfer and Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union.
Human remains found behind nursing home on SE Side of San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO โ A person visiting a loved one at a nursing home found some human remains Wednesday morning on the cityโs Southeast Side, police said. According to Officer Doug Greene, a spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department, skeletal remains were found around 11:30 a.m. in a wooded area behind the Rio at Mission Trails nursing home. Greene said due to the composition of the remains, itโs difficult to determine a gender. Officers are canvassing the area for clues. Anyone who may have information about the case is asked to call SAPD.

Students experiencing abuse at home still getting services through schools, Metro Health despite pandemic challenges
SAN ANTONIO โ School used to be a safe haven for children experiencing or witnessing abuse at home. She focuses on Northside ISD, while the other two caseworkers focus mainly on San Antonio ISD and East Central ISD. โFriends and family, and parents and teachers making those referrals, site coordinators making those referrals,โ Sandoval said. Greene also wants families to know they can always get in contact with police about domestic violence situations. Every substation, including Public Safety Headquarters downtown, has a Crisis Response Team comprised of officers and advocates who specifically work with domestic violence victims.
Man, 89, arrested in shooting death of wife in southeast San Antonio home
SAN ANTONIO โ An 89-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of his wife Thursday morning on the cityโs Southeast Side. According to booking records, George Holland has been charged with murder in the slaying of the woman, whose name has not been released. Records indicate that the woman, who is in her 80s and has the same last name as the suspect, was shot several times. Officer Doug Greene, a police spokesman, said the neighbors called 911 around 9:30 after making the discovery in the 100 block of Mendoza Street. A motive hasnโt been established, but Greene said the couple had health issues, but wasnโt specific on what type.

Some people who were shot are in critical condition, as I speak, or in the hospital, Greene said. The shopping area, usually considered safe, turned into a crime scene as investigators searched for evidence. Independence Day DWIs down in San Antonio, but still cause for concern, police say

1,300+ police calls made to SAPD for emergency declaration violations, officials say
SAN ANTONIO โ San Antonio police said theyโve received 1,313 calls for social distancing-related violations since the cityโs emergency declaration went into effect. The problem, officials say, is that some of those calls came in through 911, which is a line that should only be used only for emergencies. On the other hand, Greene isnโt saying emergency declaration violations shouldnโt be reported at all. โWe do have the non-emergency number, which is 210-207-(7273), which we would prefer people to utilize,โ Greene said. Pandemic has led to fewer DWI arrests in the area, officials say
SAN ANTONIO โ It seems the COVID-19 pandemic has led to fewer people drinking and driving, as there have been a lot fewer DWI arrests in our area. Between March 18 and April 13, SAPD reported that officers made 147 DWI arrests. Compare that to the 25 days before the mayor's order, where SAPD reported 318 DWI-related arrests. Thatโs compared to 60 DWI arrests in the 25 days prior to the order. On San Pedro Avenue, establishments that sell to-go drinks, like Beer N All, had lines at the drive-thru Wednesday.

A confrontation between the man and the officers resulted in the man being shot in the upper torso, Greene said. The officer who fatally shot the man, a two-year veteran, will be placed on administrative duty pending an investigation, which is normal police procedure for officer-involved shootings.

SAN ANTONIO โ Police say a call that came in for someone shot around 8 p.m. Saturday turned out to be quite a different scenario than they thought. When police arrived at South Presa Street and Southon Road on Saturday, they found people scrambling from a building that had 18 to 20 eight-liners inside. SAPD uncovers illegal gambling operation on South SideEven though there was a reason to notify authorities, the San Antonio Police Department is reminding people of the consequences of making bogus 911 calls. So if you get to a scene and youโre seeing people running, you donโt necessarily know whoโs suspects, whoโs victims,โ said Officer Doug Greene, SAPD spokesperson. And itโs kind of pushed back when you have a high priority call such as this.โMaking a bogus 911 call is a class A misdemeanor in Texas.

SAPD asks community to help with cracking down on gang activity
The San Antonio Police Department is asking for community involvement in an effort to crack down on gang activity. โYouโll hear from (William) McManus on several occasions (saying) that you cannot arrest the problem away,โ said Officer Doug Greene, a spokesperson for SAPD. According to Greene, gang activity is happening in every part of the city and itโs coming in waves. What we are finding is that the majority of these victims and suspects are young people. They are teenagers and in their early 20s, so we see that a lot of our kids in this community need mentors.โ
