Hundreds gather to see unveiling of official 2018 Fiesta poster

Commission: Design inspired by Mexican folk art tradition of papel picado

SAN ANTONIO – The official 2018 Fiesta San Antonio poster was unveiled Wednesday by the Fiesta San Antonio Commission.

Hundreds of members and guests of the commission gathered Wednesday night to see the unveiling, commission officials said. One design by one artist was selected as the official art of Fiesta 2018 of the 18 submissions received from artists in the San Antonio area.

Commission officials said local artist Suzan Browning's design was unveiled at The Mays Family Center at the Witte Museum. Browning, a freelance graphic designer who lives in San Antonio, has a bachelor of fine arts degree in design communications and a minor in illustration from Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

Browning's oldest daughter, Taylor Bates, who works at Artpace, saw the information about the poster design contest and knew that every year her mother always says, "I should create a Fiesta poster design." Commission officials said Bates encouraged her to submit a design as "this would be a great year to enter due to being San Antonio's Tricentennial."

Commission officials said the challenge had been set and Browning created and submitted her poster design, inspired by the Mexican folk art tradition of papel picado.

"I started drawing in elementary school and my parents just encouraged me ... Instead of buying a greeting card, my mom at times, would make me create a birthday card for a friend or relative," Browning said. "That encouragement resulted in my love for greeting card design."

Commission officials said the official 2018 poster and poster merchandise, including T-shirts, limited edition medal and more, are available online and at The Fiesta Store beginning at 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday. The Fiesta Store is at 2611 Broadway in San Antonio and hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday - Thursday and 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fridays.

Fiesta 2018 is set to take place April 19-29, commission officials said. Click here for more information.
