Termites expected to take bite out of San Antonio in 2017

Spring showers could bring termites

SAN ANTONIO – With spring showers scheduled to arrive early this year, termites could soon be on the move in San Antonio.

While these pests are present across the nation, a study by Terminix revealed that residents of warm southern states, such as Texas, Florida, and Alabama, experience the most termite infestations.

"We consistently see higher levels of termite activity in the southern United States, particularly in and around coastal cities where the weather is damp and humid. The perfect environment for a growing termite colony," said Paul Curtis, manager of technical services for Terminix.

Here are the 15 cities across the country that should be on alert for termites in 2017, as they experienced the highest number of infestations last year:

1. Mobile, Alabama
2. San Antonio, Texas
3. Memphis, Tennessee
4. Tampa, Florida
5. Miami, Florida
6. Los Angeles, California
7. Orlando , Florida
8. Jacksonville, Florida
9. Dallas, Texas
10. Baton Rouge, Louisiana
11. Houston, Texas
12. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
13. San Diego, California
14. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
15. Little Rock, Arkansas

San Antonio is second on this list, thanks to its humidity and high temperatures year-round.

Meaning that residents should be on the lookout for signs of termite infestation this coming spring. Only Mobile is expected to have a higher rate of termite activity in 2017.
