'Muscular' murder suspect cries during questioning by police, affidavit says

Roger Garza, 19, second suspect arrested in West Side shooting

SAN ANTONIO – A man who witnesses described as “muscular” broke down in tears, telling police he didn’t want to go to jail when they began questioning him about a West Side murder, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

San Antonio police arrested Roger Garza on a charge of murder Thursday, just days shy of his 20th birthday.

In the affidavit, police said Garza was one of three people involved in the Sept. 12 shooting death of Aaron Pernell Watson, 26.

Watson was killed on the porch of a home in the 2900 block of West Salinas.

According to the affidavit, two men working nearby witnessed the shooting and told investigators there were three people involved. They described one as having a muscular build and leaving in a silver car. Police said Garza does have a muscular build and owns a car that matches that description.

In addition, they said they spoke with Ernest Borrego, 23, at the scene of the murder. The affidavit said he identified Garza as one of the people involved.

Detectives tracked down Garza at a court, where he was appearing for an unrelated hearing and began questioning him. He broke down crying, telling them he didn’t want to go to jail, the affidavit said.

Police said they determined that Borrego also was involved in the crime. They arrested him and charged him with murder shortly after they spoke with him.

Both he and Garza told investigators that there was a third man who shot Watson, the affidavit says. KSAT 12 News is withholding the name of that man, who has not been arrested yet.

Police have not released an official motive for the murder.
