Taqueria Guadalajara, Johnny's Mexican restaurant flunk inspections

Employee eating in kitchen, unsafe food storage among violations

SAN ANTONIO – Taqueria Guadalajara on Interstate 35 near Rittiman failed their health inspection last week with 44 demerits. Metro Health considers more than 30 demerits a poor score.

Here are some of the things the inspector found:

  • Employees weren't washing their hands
  • An employee was seen eating and drinking in the food preparation area
  • No soap was found at the hand washing sink
  • The staff was asked to clean and sanitize utensils and equipment

An employee tells KSAT that the inspector came back later the same day. When asked how Taqueria Guadalajara did on the follow-up inspection, she replied, "we passed."

Johnny's Mexican Restaurant on North New Braunfels failed their latest inspection with 41 demerits.

Among their violations:

  • Improper hand washing procedures were being followed
  • Improper food handling was observed
  • Raw beef was being stored directly above lettuce soaking in water
  • Raw chicken was too close to some pico de gallo
  • The staff was advised to wear hair restraints

A manager at Johnny's admitted to KSAT that a customer complaint is the reason Metro Health did an inspection. After receiving a poor score, he says the inspector stopped by one day later. "By then, everything had been taken care of," he said.
