Victim's family hopes witness will come forward

Crimestoppers offering $5,000 reward for information

SAN ANTONIO – Ivan Gaines Jr. was killed just days after his friend Troy Skidmore was killed at the Springhill apartments in the 4800 block of Ray Bon Drive. While a suspect has been arrested for Skidmore's slaying, the family of Gaines is still looking for answers.

"We want closure so my cousin can rest in peace," said Gaines' cousin, Chastity Sutton. "Right now I don't feel like he's resting in peace. I know I'm not resting."

On Monday night, family and friends gathered for a candle light vigil on the 1-year anniversary of Gaines' murder. Last November, Gaines was shot while walking with a woman along Ray Bon. The woman told police that two men in an older brown vehicle drove up and someone fired twice, hitting Gaines in the right hip. He died at Brooke Army Medical Center later that night.

"It's a year the family has definitely not forgotten and we just want the community and everybody to know we haven't forgotten about him," said Sutton. "He's dearly missed."

Crimestoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of any suspects in the murder of Ivan Gaines Jr. You can call Crimestoppers at 224-STOP.
