Family wants answers in hit-and-run

Victim run over when truck ran out of gas

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio man was clinging to life Thursday, 12 days after he was hit by a vehicle as he stood next to his disabled pickup truck on Interstate 35.

Family members said 29-year-old Raul Morales remained in critical condition at the San Antonio Military Medical Center.

As his family prays for his recovery, they're also asking for help to find the driver who ran over Morales without stopping.

"The person that hit him didn't stop and render aid," said Mayra Morales, Raul's wife. "So we just want some answers."

Mayra Morales said she wants to know who ran over her husband leaving him for dead on the side of the road in the middle of the night.

She wants them to pay for the damage they've caused to her husband and their family.

According to Morales, her husband was going to pick up his cousin to give him a ride home when his pickup truck ran out of gas.

According to Selma Police, Morales was standing outside of his truck in the Southbound lanes of Interstate 35 near Olympia Parkway when he was hit on Dec. 3 around 2:30 a.m. The force of the impact ripped off his leg.

"He had no leg on his right foot. It was missing," Morales said. "It was 35 yards South of his body."

A witness spotted Morales' body on the side of the road and called 911 but the driver who hit him was long gone.

In addition to losing his right foot, Raul Morales has a broken leg, broken hand, broken ribs, a broken neck and brain injuries.

Mayra Morales said doctors are still assessing the situation, but it's likely he will have permanent brain damage.

Still, his family sees signs of improvement. On Wednesday, they said Morales responded to his mom's voice.

"She had asked him some questions like if he was mad and she tried to kiss him and he said 'no' with his finger but that was it," Morales said.

As Selma Police search for the suspect who hit Morales, his family visits him everyday in the ICU at SAMMC and prays for a miraculous recovery.

"Everyday there's a little progress, he moves his extremities now so they're just hoping he recovers soon," Morales said.

Should he recover Morales has a tough road ahead. He used to make a living doing construction and his wife said he was very active.

She worries if he'll be able to cope with being an amputee and wonders how serious the brain damage could be.

Anyone with information about the driver who hit Morales is asked to call Crime Stoppers. They are offering up to $5,000 in reward money for information leading to an arrest.

You can leave a tip with Crime Stoppers by calling 210-224-STOP. As always you can remain anonymous.
