SA eatery featured on Food Network fails inspection

El Bohio, Taco Riendo fail recent health inspection

SAN ANTONIO – The new year brings a new batch of health inspection reports. Failing scores were recently handed to two San Antonio restaurants, one of which was featured on the Food Network last fall.

Taco Riendo is located off Austin Highway. The restaurant failed their health inspection last week with 36 demerits. Some of their violations included:

  • Food temperature concerns.
  • Employee soda and medications were being stored with food for patrons.
  • There were no paper towels in two bathrooms.
  • The staff was not posting their inspection report where customers could see it.

Taco Riendo has until Jan. 15 to correct all their violations.

El Bohio on Harry Wurzbach is known for its Puerto Rican cuisine. It was featured on Food Network's 'Diners, Drive-ins and Dives' in October and just failed their health inspection with 33 demerits. Their violations included:

  • Cooked beef left to cool at room temperature.
  • Improper handwashing and food handling procedures.
  • Moldy produce.
  • A reminder for employees to wear hair restraints.

The owner of El Bohio says the inspector visited as they were re-opening after the holidays and they weren't ready. He said he's never had a score like this and is out to prove it will never happen again.

The following restaurants are beginning 2012 with perfect health inspection scores:

  • Buckhorn Bar and Grill on New Highway 90
  • El Mirador Restaurant on South St. Mary's
  • McDonald's at Loop 410 and Marbach
  • Texas Military Institute off Camp Bullis Road
  • T.G.I.Friday's at the Rim on Interstate 10 West
