Woman escapes from SAPD headquarters

SAN ANTONIOA woman who police suspected of forgery walked out of an interview room and right out the front door of police headquarters early Monday morning.

Police were investigating a call for suspicious people at a Northwest side apartment complex in the 7200 block of Snowden Road late Sunday night.

That's where police said they found evidence that a woman they identified as Cindy Koenigsberg was involved in check fraud, and had ripped off at least seven people.

Police had taken Koenigsberg into custody for questioning, but she slipped away around 4 a.m. when an officer left her unattended.

"During the course of the investigation, someone should be watching the suspect. For whatever reason, the suspect was left unattended for a short amount of time, and that's when she left," San Antonio police Lt. Chris Benavides said.

Police said it was just a matter of minutes before they realized she was gone. She was not in handcuffs when she left, and a courtesy officer let her out, because he did not know she was a suspect, police said.

"Typically, when you're going through an investigations, when you're going through the interview or interrogation, the handcuffs are typically taken off depending on the circumstances. In this case, she was left alone for a brief period," Benavides said.

Police said they do handle suspects differently depending on the charges.
