How are kidney cysts treated?

According to WebMD, simple cysts are the most common type of kidney disease. These thin-walled pockets that are sometimes filled with fluids usually don't cause harm.

WebMD states that the cause of simple kidney cysts is not known, but it is believed that the risk of getting a cyst on your kidneys increases with age.

According to WebMD, people usually don't know if they have a simple cyst unless it is detected by a doctor during an ultrasound or a CT scan.

If a simple cyst is detected, according to WebMD, the treatment plan depends on the severity of the cyst. If the cyst isn't causing any problems, then the doctor may choose to not treat it at all and just watch it over time to make sure it doesn't cause future issues. If the cyst is causing problems (such as causing pain, bleeding or is infected) then the doctor may choose to remove or drain the cyst. Larger cysts are usually removed through surgery.
