Even in death, Officer Stephanie Brown continues to serve her community.
"She would be proud knowing this is happening," her father Officer Stanley Brown said.
A little more than a year after she was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver, the 2nd Officer Stephanie Brown Scholarship was awarded.
Brown said dealing with the loss of his daughter will never be easy.
"We are always going through different emotions. But this is one of the happier times, I guess you could say," Brown said.
He said he knows his daughter would be proud of recipient Rocquelle Holmes, who plans to be a juvenile detention officer.
The scholarship was sponsored by a group of female officers from the San Antonio Police Department.
"When we lost our sister officer, we felt that we wanted to remember her and do something special with her name on it," Assistant Chief Geraldine Garcia said.
Presenting the award Saturday was Stephanie's parents, younger brother and 2 year-old daughter.
"Stephanie knew the importance of higher education herself, a college graduate. She knew how difficult it was to have the finances to go, so I know she would be very happy," Stephanie's mother Shawn Brown said.
