Schedule of Fiesta San Antonio 2014 events released

The "Party with a Purpose" kicks off April 10

The Fiesta San Antonio Commission released the 2014 schedule of events Thursday ahead of the celebration that runs from April 10 through April 27.

April marks the 123rd annual Fiesta San Antonio and with an extended celebration, there is even more to experience. With Easter falling during Fiesta, the event will now be 18 days long.

"What we were doing was trying to take events out of Easter weekend and into Palm Sunday," said Jack Hebdon, the president of the Fiesta San Antonio Commission. "Yes, it created another week of Fiesta, but really we're just moving events around in order to accommodate the traditions of San Antonio and Easter."

Fiesta is all about giving back to the community. Every event is sponsored by a local non-profit organization.

One of those organizations is the Therapy Animals of San Antonio, which benefits from the proceeds of Fiesta.

Kathi France, a trainer from Therapy Animals, brought "Zac," a west highland white terrier dog, to the media preview day Thursday.

"Zac visits schools and reads with kids," said France. "He also goes to nursing homes and he just started visiting the Ronald McDonald house."

Zac's training is all thanks to volunteers, according to Carlynn Ricks from Therapy Animals.

"We are a totally volunteer organization but we still have expenses to go with training and evaluating the teams that go into our facilities," said Ricks.

More organizations are benefiting from the celebration every year. This is the first year the Network for Young Artists will sponsor an event.

"We have three stages of live music," said Jacob Valenzuela, from NYA. "We encourage family and friends to come out and support us."

That support is something the Fiesta Commission plans to continue every year.

"We appreciate the commission," said Don Moyé, from the San Antonio Zulu Association. "They helped us when they were fledgling and now we're able to help them when they need help."
