The small town of Knippa, west of San Antonio, is feeling the shock of losing one of its own in a wrong-way crash in southwest San Antonio.
According to police, Merlyn Schneider was killed Sunday around 3 a.m. on Highway 90 near Loop 1604 when a truck traveling the wrong way crashed head-on into her car.
Superintendent of Knippa ISD Jeff Cottrill confirmed that Schneider is a principal in the school district.
"Merlyn Schneider was an amazing individual who has a passion for education and always did what was best for kids. Her untimely passing will have an unfortunate, long-lasting impact on our staff, students and community," said Cottrill in a statement.
Cottrill said he will make a formal statement Monday on Schneider's death. She was 53.
2nd driver dies in crash
Meanwhile, the driver of the truck that hit Schneider has also died.
According to investigators, Juan Pantoja, 55, had been drinking before he slammed head-on into Schneider's car.
He had to be cut from his red Ford F-150 and was taken to University Hospital, where he later died.
