"NBISD offers its condolences to his family and all those within the New Braunfels community that are being impacted by this loss," the district said in a statement.

On March 21 Mudge's students and athletes at both New Braunfels High School and the Ninth Grade Center were notified of his passing in the presence of the coaching staff, administrators and school counselors.

"Parents are encouraged to talk with their child, since it is important for them to express their feelings," the district said. "Suffering this type of loss can trigger emotional responses. Counselors are available to talk with students, as needed."

Before coming to New Braunfels, school officials said Mudge spent five years at Nacogdoches High School. He received his master's degree in kinesiology/health science from Stephen F. Austin University.

Mudge is a graduate of Midwestern State University, located in Wichita Falls, with a bachelor's degree in biology. School officials said he also played football for the Indians, where he was an all-conference defensive lineman.

A celebration of Mudge's life will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Oakwood Baptist Church, at 2154 Loop 337 in New Braunfels, with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, officials said donations are requested for Tanner and Jackson's scholarship fund by clicking here. His complete obituary and online guestbook can be found here.
