Dumped junk in NW Side neighborhood hauled off

Residents, Code Enforcement blame illegal dumping

SAN ANTONIO – A stretch of a residential street on the Northwest side looks more like a landfill than part of a neighborhood.

Heaps of discarded items line the sidewalk and street on the 100 block of Oriole Lane. Bedding, broken glass, shoes, clothes, toys, buckets, brush, furniture, boards, bottles and a toilet could all be found among the piles.

Neighbors and Code Enforcement officials believe numerous people used the area to illegally dump their trash, leaving it for neighbors to balk at and others to clean up.

And that's just what happened Wednesday morning.

A company contracted with the city sent a crew to haul off the junk.

Code Enforcement officers had inspected the property in July, but the trash pile increased by the time the company was able to do the work.

"Unfortunately, when the contractor got out there, there was just double the amount of debris," said Rod Sanchez, director of Development Services. "So we had to renegotiate the contract."

It cost the city $614 to pay the third party company to clear away the debris.

The house is vacant and the property owner deceased, so the amount will be billed to the owner's estate.

Crews also cut the grass and boarded up doors and windows of the home.

"It's an eyesore. It can bring down property values, and it is dangerous. It can be a harbor for rats and mosquitoes and other insects," Sanchez said. "It's something we take seriously and we want to have it abated as quickly as possible."
