SAPD: Man shoots, kills self after minor crash

Police: Victim shot self for unknown reason after minor wreck on I-10 access road at Medical Drive

SAN ANTONIO – A man apparently shot and killed himself after a minor crash on the Northwest Side, San Antonio police said.

The incident occurred just after 2 a.m. Monday on the Interstate 10 westbound access road at Medical Drive.

According to a preliminary SAPD report, an Infiniti was stopped at a red light when it was rear-ended by a Toyota SUV.

After the crash, the driver of the Toyota got out and approached the driver of the Infiniti to see if anyone was injured.

The Toyota driver said the crash was his fault and then suggested that they exchange their insurance information.

The driver of the Toyota went back to his vehicle and the driver of the Infiniti began to look for his insurance papers when he told police he heard a loud bang come from the Toyota.

Officers and paramedics arrived on scene and found the Toyota driver slumped over his steering wheel. Police found a gun in the driver's lap and determined the man had died.

The driver of the Infiniti was taken in for questioning, but police said it appears the Toyota driver shot himself in the head for an unknown reason after the crash.

The Toyota driver's name has not been released.
