Arson suspected in apartment fires

SAFD: Four fires break out at two NW Side apartments

SAN ANTONIO – Police and fire officials say fires at two Northwest Side apartments may have been set by an arsonist.

Fire crews responded to one of the fires around 3:30 a.m. at the Alamo Hillside Apartments in the 7600 block of Callaghan Road.

Crews arrived to heavy smoke and flames coming out of two apartments.

Firefighters put the fire out quickly, but the flames caused major damage and displaced six families.

Fire officials tell KSAT the fire is suspicious in nature because it was the fourth fire that crews responded to in the area during the overnight hours.

Three smaller fires started at an apartment complex next door, fire officials said.

Witnesses gave police a suspect description and said they saw a man walking away from the fire at Alamo Hillside Apartments.

San Antonio police used their Eagle helicopter to search the area, but no suspects were found.

Police detained a few others for questioning, but no other details have been made available. No injuries were reported.
