Wounded warrior gifted with new home

Army Sgt. Anson Curry, family move into new house

SAN ANTONIO – He fought for our country and almost gave it all for our freedom. Saturday, hundreds welcomed wounded warrior Army Sgt. Anson Curry and his family to their new home.

It was a Valentine's Day highlighting love, devotion and honor.

"He's a blessing to me and a blessing to our children. You make me a better person and I thank God for putting you in my life," Anson Curry's wife, Minie Curry, said.

Minie Curry smiled down at Anson Curry, who was 26 in 2011 when he took a shrapnel wound to the head from a grenade blast while serving in Afghanistan.

"It's was the worst call of my life," Minie Curry said. "No military spouse ever wants that call. I basically just got down on my knees, and begged God not to take him from me and the kids."

Her prayers were answered and the couple has made it through years of recovery. Anson Curry still needs around-the-clock care, but is improving every day.

"People ask me all the time how I do it," Minie Curry said. "Well, if my husband can smile every day, there's no reason that I can't smile."

Saturday, the Curry family had an extra reason to smile. Thanks to the national organization Building Homes for our Heroes and many local donors, they moved into a new home.

"Oh my God!" Minie Curry said when she walked into the new home for the first time.

The project cost almost $400,000, including medical technology, like a lift that runs from the bedroom to the bathroom.

"This is your shower," Minie Curry said to Ason Curry. "No more bed baths."

As new San Antonians, the Currys said they feel more blessed and welcomed than ever.

"Are you ready to be a Spurs fan?" Minie Curry asked Anson Curry as he gave the cameras a beaming smile and a big thumbs up.
