"It keeps you very happy, and it gives you a positive attitude and it makes you feel good about yourself," seventh-grader Brianna Mobley said.

Saturday morning Brianna laced up her shoes and ran a 5K alongside more than 100 other girls grades three through eight. It was the end celebration to the 10-week Girls on the Run program, which of course involves running, but also teaches life skills, health and self-esteem.

"It's important in life because it gets you ready for the future and it lets you know more about what's going to happen," Brianna said.

Each team of girls has a coach, who said they're learning a lot, too.

"It's challenging, you know, to try to get a group of girls to be cohesive. But that's part of the plan is that we teach them how to work together and how to appreciate each other's unique qualities," said coach Danette Schweers, whose daughter runs on her team.

The program aims to inspire determination in addressing issues like obesity, teen pregnancy, graduation rates and college readiness.
