Mother of deceased boxer takes legal action to bury son

Tony Ayala Jr. died Tuesday of apparent overdose, police say

SAN ANTONIO – The mother of controversial local boxer Tony Ayala Jr. has taken legal action to get the his body turned over to her for a proper burial.

Pauline T. Ayala filed an application Friday, requesting the Bexar County District Court grant her the authority to plan her son's funeral services.

Ayala Jr. was found dead Tuesday at his family gym from an apparent overdose, San Antonio police said.

Her attorney said Ayala's legal action is necessary to clarify she has the authority to bury her son without interruption from non-family members.

A hearing on the matter has been set for Thursday morning.
