'Selfies' help police ID suspect in cellphone robbery

Jose Sanchez, 18, accused of pointing gun at victim

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police said pictures taken of Jose Sanchez, 18, on a stolen cellphone have led to his arrest.

They said the photos helped investigators identify him as a suspect in the armed robbery of the phone owner.

The 30-year-old victim told police he was riding a bicycle on the West Side in March when he stopped near the corner of N. Navidad and Delgado streets to make a phone call, according to an arrest affidavit.

The man said an SUV stopped too and the passenger got out, pointed a gun at him and demanded his cellphone.

The victim said the driver also took his wallet.

The affidavit stated that two days later, the victim noticed pictures of a man, who he identified as the gunman, show up by way of an app he had installed on his phone prior to the robbery.

The app allows users to automatically upload and store information, including pictures, from their phone to an online account.

The affidavit stated that the victim turned over the photos to investigators, who shared them with other police agencies for help in identifying the suspect.

Sanchez was arrested Wednesday on a charge of aggravated robbery.
