Second arrest made in January shooting death on NW Side

Miguel Garcia, 18, charged with capital murder

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police have arrested a man in the Jan. 26 shooting death of Brett Gorecki, 19, at a Northwest Side apartment complex.

Miguel Garcia, 18, was arrested Monday afternoon at a home on the East Side by members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force. He has been charged with capital murder.

Police said Gorecki was shot and killed at the Sonoma Canyon apartments on Fairhaven Street. His body was found in the parking lot near a dumpster.

Investigators believe Gorecki was set up by Garcia and others with the intent to steal drugs from him.

Witnesses told police they saw the attackers standing over Gorecki and kicking him, according to a police report. Witnesses said they saw someone shoot Gorecki three times as he was on the ground, the report said.

The witnesses told police it was too dark to completely describe the attackers, the report said. The shooting happened just before 7 a.m. Witnesses told police they saw the attackers leave in a dark-colored mid-size car.

Garcia's arrest is the second made in the case. James Taylor, 18, was arrested Feb. 21 after a tip was submitted to Crime Stoppers. Taylor was also charged with capital murder.

"Now we have our second arrest. This is still an ongoing investigation, an ongoing case," SAPD Officer Doug Greene said. "We're anticipating making more arrests in this case and finding all of those who were either directly or indirectly involved in the murder of this individual."

Of those involved, investigators believe there were two shooters. Police are working to determine who the shooters were and track down anyone else involved Gorecki's killing.
