East Side apartment standoff ends with suspect in custody

Justin Gamez, 26, is charged with aggravated assault

SAN ANTONIO – A standoff situation at an apartment complex on the city's East Side has ended with a man ending up in police custody, authorities at the scene said.

The incident began around 1:15 a.m. in the 100 block of Delmar Street, not far from South New Braunfels Avenue and South Hackberry Street, when police received a call regarding a family disturbance with a gun.

SWAT arrived at the scene around 4 a.m. and negotiators attempted to get the suspect to come out.

Officer Doug Greene, a San Antonio police Department spokesman, said the standoff ended Wednesday morning when the man, Justin Gamez, 26, was arrested. Greene said Gamez turned himself in to police unarmed, saying that they were waking up his neighbors by using their loudspeaker to talk him out of his home.

Police said a 17-year-old boy was originally inside the apartment when the incident began texting his mom at another location saying Gamez was pointing a gun at everyone inside and that he was afraid.

Police said the teen's mom quickly called police.

Officers said the teen and another man were eventually able to leave the apartment safely on their own.

KSAT 12 was told a single gunshot was fired during the ordeal, but officers believe it was simply fired into the air.

Authorities said there were no injuries and that neighbors in the immediate area were evacuated as a precaution.

Officer Greene said Gamez could face additional charges as well.
