Fort Sam Houston headstones adorned with American flags

Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, community volunteers help place flags

SAN ANTONIO – The headstones at Fort Sam Houston have been adorned with American flags in honor of Memorial Day.

"I think it's good because it's good that we're all going to honor it, because we wouldn't be here enjoying our lives without these people all around us," said Morgan Willson, a Girl Scout.

More than 1,000 local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and community volunteers helped place the flags at the cemetery Friday.

Troop leaders said this is a great example to teach young children about the importance of honoring fallen heroes.

"From a very early age, both the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts learn about patriotism," Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas CEO Angela Salinas said. "I think for them being able to come and see how one generation takes care if the next generation really instills all that's best in the American character."

It is just one of many group service projects the organizations take part in every year.
