The incident occurred at a Focus Eyecare in the 12200 block of Toepperwein Road.

Police said the victim had been in for an eye exam the previous day before noticing that she was missing a diamond ring and several necklaces worth roughly $20,000.

According to police, it was Ortiz who conducted the exam and made her put her purse on a counter out of view. At one point, police said, Ortiz turned out the lights and made her close an eye for what seemed like an unusually long time, police said.

Police later found pawn shop records and surveillance video that showed Ortiz pawned the woman's jewelry.
